New AI project helps councils identify social housing risks earlier

26 June 2026

A new AI for Social Good project is exploring how artificial intelligence and human expertise can work together to support safer, more proactive management of social housing across the UK.

Co-developed by CHIA Executive Director, Dr Ramit Debnath, PRISM is led by Professor Ronita Bardhan and Dr Adhib Hussain Syed in collaboration with Cambridge City Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council.

Working closely with local authority partners, the team is combining AI with the expertise of housing professionals to identify complex, multi-dimensional risks that go beyond predictive AI alone. The project’s broader goal is to harness human agency and professional knowledge to create a blueprint for human-inspired AI tools that support local councils in delivering safer homes and better outcomes for residents.

The project reflects CHIA’s mission to develop human-inspired AI that complements, rather than replaces, human judgement by bringing together AI, professional expertise and lived experience.

The project is supported by ai@cam and the UK Government’s Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government through the flagship Local Government AI Accelerator programme.
