Fundamental Human-Level AI
Makes core AI technologies more human.
Fundamental human-level AI combines the latest advances in algorithms and computing with insights related to human intelligence or condition (in its many forms) to yield improved machine learning, speech and language processing, computer vision, robotics and other forms of machine intelligence. Its development involves collaboration between AI and a wide variety of human-centric disciplines.
Responsible AI
Builds equity, inclusivity, interpretability, privacy, and security into AI at the ground level.
As AI systems are used more widely across society, it is critical to ensure that these systems are responsible. This is relevant for all the users of AI, but particularly critical when this technology is used for sensitive, assistive or predictive tasks such as medical or legal decision-making.
Social and Interactive AI
Supports human and human-machine interaction.
Conversational AI enables humans and computers to communicate clearly and effectively through speech or text. Systems such as chatbots and voice assistants are used across a wide variety industries ranging from customer service to triaging medical symptoms. Although the best existing platforms can create human-like interactions, they lack in flexibility and in understanding of the social system and the world we live in. Achieving fully natural conversations is an important AI challenge that can benefit from insights from humanities, cognitive and social sciences.
Cognitive AI
Benefits from (or provides insight into) the human condition.
Human-like computing aims to equip machines with human-like learning, reasoning and perceptual abilities. Such abilities can help computers to interpret the aims and intentions of humans and they can enable better collaboration and communication between humans and machines. Human-like computing may integrate knowledge from AI, cognitive, biological and other sciences. It can ultimately benefit many applications that require close interaction between computers and human users, e.g., AI-powered tutoring, personalised healthcare, among others.
Health and Global AI
Helps humans understand and address medical and global problems.
Health and global AI is a major application area that concerns human health and well-being as well as the environment we live in. AI has many applications for health, ranging from systems that automatically generate new medical discoveries, diagnostic techniques and treatments to those that use multi sensory data for early health diagnosis or management of medical conditions.
Creative AI
Supports human creativity.
Creative AI is aimed at developing systems that can support, augment or even automate creative process. Such AI can be used to generate new music, literature or other forms of art, with or even without human involvement. It has many applications such as art restoration or generation of new and liberating forms of human expression. This type of AI is highly challenging and requires close collaboration between fields that have been traditionally quite distant from each other: AI and arts and humanities.
