Professor Anna Korhonen elected Fellow of the British Academy
17 July 2026
The Centre for Human-Inspired Artificial Intelligence (CHIA) is delighted to congratulate our Director, Professor Anna Korhonen, on her election as a Fellow of the British Academy.
The Fellowship is one of the highest honours in the humanities and social sciences, recognising scholars who have achieved distinction in their fields through exceptional research and leadership.
Professor Korhonen’s election reflects her pioneering contributions to artificial intelligence, natural language processing and interdisciplinary research, as well as her commitment to bringing together technical and human-centred disciplines to address the opportunities and challenges of AI.
Commenting on the honour, Professor Korhonen said:
“I am deeply honoured. For an AI scientist, this recognition from the UK’s national academy for the humanities and social sciences feels especially meaningful. It is a reminder that the questions that will shape the future of AI are not just technical—they are fundamentally human.
That vision has been at the heart of CHIA from the beginning, and I am enormously grateful to everyone who has helped build our interdisciplinary community. Our Centre is where technical and human-centred disciplines come together to address questions that no single discipline can answer alone. This will be essential to shaping AI that truly benefits people, societies, and the world we share.”
Dr Ramit Debnath, CHIA’s Executive Director, said:
“Huge congratulations to Anna on this richly deserved recognition by the British Academy. Her election as a Fellow marks a transformative moment for CHIA, empowering us to further bridge the arts and sciences as we pioneer human-centric AI systems designed for global good.”
Since its launch, CHIA has brought together researchers from across the University of Cambridge and beyond to advance human-inspired AI through interdisciplinary collaboration. Professor Korhonen has played a central role in shaping the Centre’s vision, fostering research that combines expertise in artificial intelligence, the humanities, the social sciences and other disciplines to address some of the most pressing questions facing society.
Everyone at CHIA warmly congratulates Professor Korhonen on this outstanding achievement.
