About
John Burden is Programme Co-Director of the Kinds of Intelligence programme at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence (CFI). He is also a Senior Research Fellow on the RECoG-AI projects. In addition, John is a Senior Research Associate on the Solid Foundations project at the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER). He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of York and a Master’s degree from Oriel College, Oxford.
Research
John’s research focuses on:
- Developing evaluation frameworks for assessing AI systems’ capabilities and limitations
- Understanding the risks and impacts of general-purpose AI systems
- Investigating the foundations of intelligence through the Kinds of Intelligence programme
- Bridging technical AI evaluation with broader societal and existential risk perspectives
