Director of Research in Psychiatric Neuroimaging

About

John Suckling is Director of Research in Psychiatric Neuroimaging in the Department of Psychiatry. A physicist with over 30 years’ experience in medical imaging, he applies neuroimaging and biostatistics to investigate diverse neurodevelopmental and psychopathological conditions and their treatment through neuroscience, experimental medicine, and large-scale multi-centre clinical trials.

Professor Suckling also has a strong interest in research ethics and is the Chair of the Psychology Research Ethics Committee, and the University Research Ethics Committee that oversees University policy for research that involves human participants and personal data.

Research

John’s research is currently looking at the ways neuroimaging – the combination of brain imaging and computational methodologies – can have a direct impact on the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of developmental conditions, cognitive consequences of therapy, and mental ill-health. John and his team have interest in the neuroimaging of these areas:

  • Head injury and concussion
  • Brain tumours
  • Autism
  • Other developmental disorders, including: schizophrenia, hallucinations, depression and other affective disorders Machine Learning and statistical inference
