Masashi’s group is interested in cellular stress responses, with particular emphasis on cellular senescence and its diverse effector programs. Masashi is originally a surgeon (MD) by training. He went on to undertake a research PhD in the field of apoptosis, before moving to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories for his postdoc where he began work on the epigenetic aspects of senescent cells. Masashi joined the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute in 2006 as a group leader.
Research
Masashi’s research focuses on:
- How stress affects cells, leading to aging and dysfunction
- The role of DNA organization and cancer-linked genes in cellular aging
- How accumulation of aged cells contributes to organismal aging
