UK AI Olympiad team wins four medals with support from CHIA

9 August 2026

The UK team secured two gold and two bronze medals at the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI) 2026, with all four students returning home with a medal. CHIA helped organise the team’s participation and facilitated their training weekend at King’s College, Cambridge.

Held in Astana, Kazakhstan, from 2–8 August, the competition brought together secondary school students to test their skills in artificial intelligence and machine learning.

From Cambridge to the international stage

Anango, Zane, Yijun and Ahsan earned their places through the UK AI Olympiad selection process, which included a national exam, an interview round and a training weekend at King’s College.

With support from CHIA’s Umang Bhatt and colleagues, the training helped prepare the students for the challenges ahead. In Astana, they tackled unseen machine learning problems across two six-hour rounds, drawing on technical knowledge, creativity and problem-solving under pressure.

Their medal success reflects both the students’ exceptional ability and the dedication of the organisers, trainers and supporters who helped them prepare.

The UK AI Olympiad was established to give UK students the opportunity to develop their AI skills and compete internationally. CHIA is proud to support this work and help young people explore their potential in AI.

Looking ahead to Singapore

The team is now training for the next International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence, which will take place in Singapore from 4–10 July 2027.

Congratulations to Anango, Zane, Yijun and Ahsan on their outstanding achievement. We look forward to following their progress as preparations continue for the next competition.
